Custom Software Development for News and Media Houses
Internal software for media businesses with several desks, ad teams and contributors, built around your process instead of forcing it into a generic tool.
This page is about internal and back-office software for established media companies: multi-edition publishers, regional TV and radio, digital studios and agencies that run on tight cycles. It is not about the public website. It is about the systems your own staff open every day. Think of it as the plumbing that keeps the desks, ad team and accounts connected.
Off-the-shelf tools handle writing and scheduling well, but they stop at the edges: ad bookings, edition planning, freelancer payouts, syndication and rights. Teams fill those gaps with spreadsheets and chat. Custom software makes sense when the gap costs real hours or real money every week. We start by measuring that cost with your team before writing any code.
What media operations need from custom software
Ad booking and inventory
Sales teams sell the same slots across print, web and newsletters. A shared booking sheet with clashes flagged avoids double-selling a front-page position.
Multi-edition planning
City editions share stories but differ in pages, ads and deadlines. Planners need to see what runs where without rebuilding each edition from scratch.
Contributor and vendor payments
Stringers, photographers and freelancers are paid per story or per assignment. Accurate records and deductions such as TDS need to be easy to produce at month end.
Archive and rights tracking
Photos, video and syndicated copy carry licence terms and expiry dates. Reusing an asset after its licence ends is a risk a simple register can prevent.
What we build for media houses
Ad order and invoice system
Quotes, bookings, creative status and invoices in one place, with GST lines computed from rules your accountant approves. Reports show what is sold and what is still open.
Edition and page planner
A planning board that maps stories and ads to editions and slots. Changes made by one desk are visible to the others straight away.
Contributor payout tool
Submissions, approvals, rate cards and payment batches with a clear audit trail. Payout files are produced in a format your bank accepts.
Asset and licence register
Each photo or clip is tagged with source, licence and expiry. Search surfaces what can be used, and warnings appear before an expired asset goes live.
What it costs
The anchor suits a focused tool with a few roles. Cost drivers are the number of modules, how many systems must be connected, data migration from existing sheets and reporting needs.
Questions we get asked
How do we decide between custom software and a ready tool?
List the manual tasks that cost the most time and check whether a ready tool covers them. If it covers most, adapt your process and buy. If your ad, edition or payout rules are unusual and eat hours weekly, custom build is justified. We help you do this in discovery.
Can the software connect to our CMS and accounts package?
Usually yes, through APIs, exports or scheduled file sync. Some older accounting software only offers CSV import, which we can still automate. We confirm the integration points before we fix the quote, since they are the main source of surprises.
How are existing spreadsheets migrated?
We review the sheets with your team, clean duplicates and inconsistent names, then import them in a test run you can check. Messy history is common in media houses. We agree early how much past data is brought in and how much stays archived.
What if our process changes after launch?
Processes change, so we build rules such as rates and workflows as settings where practical, not hard-coded. Larger changes are handled as new scoped work. The first month after launch includes support for fixes, and you can add modules over time.
