Ecommerce Website Development for News and Media Brands
Sell subscriptions, back issues, event passes and merchandise from your media brand, with Indian payments, GST invoices and delivery handled properly.
This page covers online stores for media brands: print magazine subscriptions, single-issue sales, annual reports, event tickets, books and branded merchandise. It is for publishers who want revenue beyond ads, and who already have an audience that trusts the masthead. We keep the scope to what a media brand actually sells, and nothing more than that.
Selling a magazine online is a different job from running a news site. You need recurring billing, delivery addresses, postal charges, GST invoices and a way to handle returned copies. We build the store so your accounts team is not matching Razorpay payouts to spreadsheets every month. Each of these tasks has a fixed rule that can be built once and checked.
What media brands need from an online store
Subscription and renewal handling
Print and digital plans renew at different times and prices. Reminders before expiry reduce lapses, and a clear cancel path reduces chargeback disputes.
Delivery by post and courier
Magazines often travel by post or a courier with low rates. Address validation, pincode checks and a dispatch list for your packing team save wasted copies.
GST-ready invoices
Printed periodicals, digital access and merchandise may be taxed differently. Invoices should show the right lines, and your chartered accountant should confirm the rates to apply.
Gifts and bulk orders
Schools, libraries and companies buy multiple subscriptions. They need one invoice, several delivery addresses and a simple way to reorder next year.
What we build for a media store
Print plus digital plans
Plan pages that bundle a print subscription with online access, or sell each alone. Access to member pages unlocks automatically after payment, with no manual email.
Back-issue and single-copy catalogue
Issue pages with cover, contents and stock count. Pre-orders for upcoming special editions help you decide the print run.
Event and webinar passes
Ticket types, UPI payment, confirmation by email and WhatsApp, and a check-in list for the gate. Useful for conclaves, awards and reader meets.
Orders and dispatch panel
One screen for new orders, address labels, dispatch status and returns. Subscribers can see the date of their next issue without calling your office.
What it costs
The anchor covers a standard store with catalogue, checkout and payments. Recurring subscription logic, bulk-order accounts and courier integrations raise the quote, which we fix after a discovery call.
Questions we get asked
Can we take recurring payments for subscriptions?
Yes. Razorpay supports recurring payment mandates for cards and UPI autopay, subject to the gateway's own approval and customer bank limits. We build the plan and renewal flow around it. Some customers will still prefer annual one-time payments, so we usually offer both.
How do we handle postal delivery for a magazine?
The store collects and validates addresses, then produces a dispatch list for your printer or packer. We can connect a courier tool for tracking where it fits. Postal subscriptions often need manual follow-up for undelivered copies, so we add a simple resend request.
Should we build on Shopify or custom?
Shopify suits product-heavy merchandise and quick setup. A custom store suits tight links between subscriptions, content access and your CMS. We recommend after looking at your plans. Many media brands do well with a hybrid, a store for goods and a small app for access.
Can digital subscribers get access to locked stories automatically?
Yes. We connect the store to your site's login so a paid plan opens member content at once and closes it on expiry. This needs a membership layer on the site, which we scope as part of the project rather than as an afterthought.
