News Media Mobile App Development for Android and iOS
A news or media app built in Flutter or React Native, with push alerts, offline reading and small downloads that suit the phones your readers actually own.
This page covers mobile apps for news publishers, magazines, TV and radio brands and creator-led media. The question is not whether you can have an app. The question is whether your readers will install it, keep it, and open it more often than they open your website. We will say plainly if the answer for your brand is no.
In India most news reading happens on a phone, mostly Android, often on a small data plan. An app can earn its place with alerts, saved stories and a lighter reading experience. It cannot create loyalty by itself. We build one codebase for Android and iOS and plan the launch around the Play Store review.
What a news app has to get right
Alerts readers do not mute
Push is the main reason to have an app, and the fastest way to get uninstalled. Topic choices and quiet hours let readers pick what interrupts them.
Small size and data saver mode
A heavy app on a budget phone is deleted within a week. Text-first loading, optional images and a light download size matter more than animation.
Offline and flaky-network reading
Readers commute through patchy coverage. Stories fetched earlier should open without a signal, and a failed load should show a clear retry, not a blank screen.
Regional language reading
Marathi and Hindi text must render cleanly at different font sizes. Readers also expect a language switch that remembers the choice.
What we build into the app
Feed, sections and saved stories
Home feed, section tabs and a bookmark list that syncs through a reader account. Content comes from your existing CMS through an API, so editors do not post twice.
Topic-based push notifications
Readers subscribe to sections, cities or live events. Editors send from a simple panel with a preview, and a send log shows what went out and when.
Audio and video blocks
Podcast players, short video embeds and a live-stream card for events. Playback continues when the phone screen locks, which readers expect from audio.
Store release and updates
We prepare the listing, privacy declarations and the first release for Play Store and App Store review. After launch, we help you plan updates around what readers actually use.
What it costs
A mobile app MVP typically takes 10 to 12 weeks. Cost depends on how many content types you carry, audio and video features, login and payment, and how much the app depends on your CMS API.
Questions we get asked
Do we need a separate app for Android and iOS?
No. We build both from one codebase using Flutter or React Native, which keeps cost and update effort lower than two separate apps. Some device features may need a small amount of platform-specific work, and we flag those early in the quote.
Will our editors have to post stories twice?
No. The app reads from your CMS through an API, so a published story appears in the feed automatically. Editors only use a separate panel for push alerts and any app-only promotions. If your CMS has no usable API, we add a small service layer.
How do we keep push notifications from annoying readers?
Give readers topic and city choices at first launch, set a daily cap in the sender panel, and keep breaking alerts for real breaking news. We build these controls. The editorial discipline, deciding what deserves an alert, remains with your desk.
Can the app carry ads?
Yes, with banner or native placements through an ad network, or direct sponsor slots you manage. Ads add weight and can slow the app, so we keep slots few and test performance on a low-end Android phone before release.
