CodeIgniter Development: Maintenance and CI3 to CI4 Upgrades
Support, security fixes and planned upgrades for CodeIgniter applications. Also new lightweight builds where a small footprint matters.
CodeIgniter development in India is mostly about keeping existing systems alive. Many school portals, billing tools and CRMs built between 2012 and 2020 still run on CodeIgniter 3, which is no longer the supported line. They work, and the owner is nervous about touching them. Our first job is usually to find out what the app really does.
We handle both sides. For existing apps, we audit, patch and plan an upgrade to CodeIgniter 4 or Laravel. For new work, CodeIgniter is still a fair pick when you want a small, fast framework with a gentle learning curve and cheap shared hosting. We tell you plainly which path costs less over three years.
What goes wrong with older CodeIgniter apps
CI3 is past its support window
Security fixes for CodeIgniter 3 have stopped, and newer PHP versions break parts of it. Hosts moving to PHP 8 can take your app down.
Fat controllers, no tests
Business logic sits in controllers and views. Changing a discount rule means reading hundreds of lines and hoping.
Hidden security debt
Missing CSRF settings, weak session handling and raw queries show up in older builds. A single exposed upload folder is enough for a breach.
Original developer gone
No documentation, a database nobody has mapped, and credentials in someone's old email. We see this often and can start from the code itself.
What our CodeIgniter development includes
Health check and security audit
We review code, server settings and the database, then give a ranked list: fix now, fix soon, can wait. You see the risk before you pay for repairs.
CI3 to CI4 migration
A stepwise move: namespaces, routing, models, validation and views, tested after each step. We often run both versions in parallel while modules are moved.
PHP 8 compatibility fixes
Removing deprecated calls so the app runs on a supported PHP version. Often this is the cheapest way to extend a system's life.
New modules for existing apps
Reports, payment links, WhatsApp alerts or API endpoints added without rewriting the whole system. We follow your existing structure where it is sound.
Performance tuning
Index fixes, query rewrites and caching for slow lists and reports. Many pages speed up a lot with a few targeted changes.
Move to Laravel when it makes sense
If the app needs queues, APIs or multiple developers, we plan a gradual move to Laravel and explain the cost against staying put.
How a CodeIgniter upgrade runs
Discover
We get the code, a database copy and hosting access, run the app locally, and list modules, users and risky areas.
Define
You get a written choice: patch only, upgrade to CI4, or move to Laravel. Each option comes with its reasons and a fixed quote for phase one.
Design
We keep screens familiar so staff are not retrained. If the interface also needs a refresh, we handle that as a separate, optional step.
Build
Changes are made on a staging copy with tests around money, login and data exports. Each module is signed off before the next one starts.
Ship & extend
Cut-over happens with a backup and rollback plan. One month of support follows, and we can stay on a care plan.
What it costs
Audits and fixes depend entirely on code size and condition. A full rebuild on a new framework starts near our web app anchor of ₹1,50,000 (excl. GST).
- Number of modules to migrate
- Code quality and test coverage
- Database clean-up needed
- Integrations to keep working
- Staff training and hosting changes
All prices exclude 18% GST. See also website costs and app costs.
Questions we get asked
Is CodeIgniter 3 still safe to run?
It no longer receives official security fixes, and it struggles on newer PHP. Many CI3 apps still run, but risk grows each year. We audit for known weaknesses, patch what we can, and plan an upgrade before your host forces one.
How hard is moving from CI3 to CI4?
CI4 is not a drop-in upgrade. Namespaces, routing, models and views change. Small apps move in weeks, large ones in phases. We estimate after reading your code, and we can run old and new together during the transition.
Should I upgrade to CI4 or move to Laravel?
Upgrade to CI4 if the app is small and your needs are steady. Choose Laravel if you plan queues, APIs, many modules or a bigger team. We compare both with real costs for your code before you decide.
Can you maintain my app monthly?
Yes. Maintenance covers security patches, backups, small fixes and server checks. Scope and price are agreed after we review the app. New features are quoted separately so you always know what you are paying for.
What if I have no source code, only a live site?
That makes work harder, because compiled-in code cannot be rebuilt from a browser. Ask your old developer or host for a file backup first. If it is truly lost, we can rebuild from the live behaviour, which is a new project.
Will my data be safe during migration?
Yes. We take full backups first, work on a copy, and compare record counts and key reports before and after. The live system is only switched when you approve test results, and a rollback is ready.
