Logistics Mobile App Development for Drivers and Delivery Staff
A driver and field-staff app that works on low-end Android phones and weak networks. It captures trip status, photos and signatures where the work happens.
This page covers a mobile app for logistics: the app a driver, delivery executive or warehouse supervisor uses on the job. It records pickup, transit and delivery events, takes proof of delivery and sends them back to your office. We design for slow phones first. That shapes every choice below.
The hard part is not the screens. It is the phone. Drivers use budget Android handsets, mobile data drops on highways, and battery drains if location tracking is careless. An app for this world has to be built around those limits from the first sprint. Field testing on a real route matters more than a demo.
What logistics teams need from a mobile app
Works with poor connectivity
A driver must be able to mark delivery done in a basement godown with no signal. The app stores the event and syncs when the network returns.
Battery-aware location
Constant GPS polling kills a cheap phone by afternoon. Location should be captured at trip events and at sensible intervals, with the driver's consent stated clearly.
Fast proof of delivery
A photo of the signed challan, a receiver name and an OTP or signature should take under a minute. Slow proof capture makes drivers skip it.
Simple language
Many drivers read Hindi or Marathi more comfortably than English. Large buttons, few steps and local-language labels reduce training time.
What we build for drivers and field staff
Driver trip app
Accept trip, mark loaded, in transit and delivered, with a clear daily list. Android is the priority, since that is what drivers carry.
Proof of delivery capture
Camera capture of documents, receiver name, OTP or signature, and a timestamp. Files compress on the phone so uploads work on 3G speeds.
Expense entry
Diesel and toll amounts logged with a receipt photo during the trip. The office sees them against the trip without calling the driver.
Warehouse scan flow
For hubs, barcode or QR scanning at inward and outward points on a phone camera. This avoids buying dedicated scanners for a small hub.
What it costs
We build one codebase in Flutter or React Native for Android and iOS, though most drivers will be on Android. Offline sync, scanning and the back end connection affect the final quote.
Questions we get asked
Do drivers need iPhones or only Android?
Plan for Android first. Most drivers use budget Android phones. We build with one codebase, so an iOS version is possible later, mainly for office managers or owners who track trips on an iPhone. Owners or office managers may use iPhones.
Can the app run without internet?
Yes for the core actions. Trip status, photos and expenses are saved on the phone and synced when a connection returns. Live map tracking and anything needing the server will wait for the network. Plan for patchy network on highways.
Will drivers resist being tracked?
Some will. Tell them what is tracked and when, keep tracking tied to active trips and explain how it protects them in disputes. We build clear consent screens and can limit tracking to trip hours. Keep the data collected to the minimum.
How long does a driver app take to launch?
A mobile app MVP takes roughly 10 to 12 weeks. Play Store review adds a few days, and a pilot with ten or twenty drivers before full rollout is recommended so you can fix real-world problems. Pilot first, then roll out to every driver.
