Java development for back ends that need to stay up

Spring Boot APIs, integrations with banks and ERPs, and Java upgrades for systems that already carry real transactions. For teams that want steady, well-documented back ends, not a trendy rewrite.

Java still sits behind a large share of Indian banking, insurance, telecom and government software. Buyers rarely ask for Java by name. They ask for something that handles volume, keeps audit trails and can be maintained by whoever joins the team in three years. Java with Spring Boot is a sensible answer to that request.

Our Java work falls in three groups. New back ends and APIs for web and mobile products. Integrations that connect your system to a bank, a payment provider, an ERP or a partner portal. And upgrades of ageing Java 8 or Struts applications to supported versions, done in small safe steps.

Where Java projects go wrong, and what we do about it

01

A Java 8 application on an unsupported server

It runs on an old Tomcat or WebLogic box, dependencies have known vulnerabilities, and upgrades keep being postponed. We upgrade the runtime and frameworks in stages, with tests added around the risky parts first.

02

Integrations that fail quietly

Bank file uploads, partner APIs and SMS gateways time out, and nobody notices until a customer calls. We build retries, queues and alerting so failures are visible and recoverable.

03

One big application nobody can change

A single codebase where billing, users and reports are tangled. We rarely recommend microservices for this. Usually a cleaner modular structure inside one deployable app removes most of the pain.

04

Overbuilt for the actual traffic

Some quotes propose Kubernetes and five services for an app with a few hundred daily users. We size the architecture to your real load and growth plan, and write down when to scale up.

Java development work we do

01

Spring Boot APIs and back ends

REST APIs with Spring Boot, Spring Security and JPA for web and mobile apps. Role-based access, validation, pagination and an OpenAPI document come standard, so front-end teams can work in parallel.

02

Enterprise and bank integrations

Connectors for payment gateways, SFTP file exchange, SOAP services still used by older partners, and ERP APIs. We log every request and response so disputes can be traced.

03

Android-adjacent back ends

If your Android app needs a server, we can build it in Java and keep the team on one language. For the app itself we normally propose Flutter or Kotlin, based on your need.

04

Legacy Java modernisation

Upgrades from Java 8 and older frameworks to current long-term-support versions. We replace deprecated libraries, add tests around critical flows and move configuration out of code.

05

Batch jobs and scheduled processing

Month-end statements, invoice runs, data imports and report generation using Spring Batch or scheduled workers, with restart support if a job fails halfway.

06

Database design and performance

PostgreSQL or MySQL schema design, indexing, query tuning and migrations with Flyway. We review slow queries with real data volumes, not guesses.

When this is the wrong choice. If you need a content website, a store or a quick MVP to test an idea, Java is slower to start than Laravel or Node.js and will cost more for little gain. Pick Java when you expect heavy integrations, strict audit needs or a long-lived system, or when your own team already knows it.

How we run a Java engagement

01

Discover

We collect the interfaces, data volumes, compliance needs and any existing Java code. A read-only review of the current system and its logs shows where it actually hurts.

02

Define

You receive a scope document with module boundaries, integration list and non-functional targets such as expected peak requests. The fixed quote follows from it.

03

Design

We agree the API contract and database model first, and draw failure paths for each external integration. Reviewers on your side can sign off before code is written.

04

Build

Code ships to a staging environment every cycle with automated tests and a build pipeline. Integrations are tested against sandbox endpoints, then against a small real volume.

05

Ship & extend

Deployment is scripted and repeatable, with dashboards for errors and slow calls. One month of support is included, and later changes can go on a monthly arrangement.

What it costs

Starts at ₹1,50,000 (excl. GST) for a custom back end or web app

Integration-heavy and modernisation projects are quoted after a discovery call. We prefer a short paid review before pricing any legacy upgrade.

  • Number and quality of external integrations
  • Age and test coverage of existing code
  • Compliance and audit requirements
  • Expected load and uptime needs
  • Documentation and handover depth

All prices exclude 18% GST. See also website costs and app costs.

Questions we get asked

Is Java a good choice for a new project in 2026?

It is a good choice when you need strong typing, long-term maintainability, heavy integrations or a hiring pool that knows it. For a simple marketing site or quick MVP, lighter stacks are cheaper. We recommend based on your use case and tell you if Java is not the right fit.

Can you take over a Java project built by another vendor?

Yes, after a code review. We check build setup, test coverage, dependency risks and documentation, then give you a written view of what to keep and what to fix. Taking over without that review is how hidden costs appear later, so we insist on it.

Do you build microservices?

Only when there is a clear reason, such as separate teams, very different scaling needs or an isolated high-risk integration. For most Indian SMB and mid-size systems, one well-structured Spring Boot application is easier to run, cheaper to host and faster to change.

Can you connect our Java system to a bank or payment provider?

Yes. We have to work within what the provider offers, whether REST, SOAP or file-based exchange, and within their certification process. We handle the technical side, logging and reconciliation, while approvals from the bank stay with you.

How do you handle security?

Spring Security for authentication and roles, input validation, parameterised queries, secrets kept outside the repo and dependency scans in the build. For regulated work we also document access controls. We do not claim formal certifications for our studio.

What do we get at handover?

The full source in your repository, build and deploy scripts, database migrations, an API document and a short runbook for common failures. A one-month support window after launch covers fixes to anything we delivered.
